How much does a website cost in Sydney?
Published prices in Sydney run from a few hundred dollars to five figures for the same words “business website”. Here is what sits behind the difference.

The price bands you will see
Scan Sydney web design sites in 2026 and the advertised prices cluster into four bands.
| Band | Typical advertised price | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builders | A$0–A$40 per month | Wix, Squarespace or Shopify with a template you set up yourself. Your time is the real cost. |
| Budget and independent | A$199–A$1,000 | A small number of pages built quickly, often by a solo designer or a high-volume provider. Quality varies more in this band than any other. |
| Small agency packages | A$1,500–A$3,500 | Usually WordPress on a premium theme, with copy assistance and some SEO setup. |
| Custom agency projects | A$3,500–A$15,000+ | Discovery, custom design, custom development, project management, and often an ongoing retainer. |
All four can produce a site that works and all four can produce a disappointment. The band tells you about the process and the overhead more than the outcome.
For reference, WEBSYD sits at the accessible end deliberately: a landing page from A$199, a Starter website at A$299, Business at A$499 and Growth at A$699, with no GST added. The reason is structural rather than generous — no office, no account managers, and lightweight static builds instead of a theme-and-plugin stack. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.
What actually drives the price
Number of pages, and how different they are
Ten pages that share one layout cost far less than five pages that each need their own. A page per service is where most of the value sits for a local business, because it is how people search.
Who writes the words
Copywriting is often the biggest hidden line. If the quote assumes you will supply finished text and you have not written any, the project will stall — and the words are what determines whether the site converts.
Photography
Real photos of your team, vans, premises and finished work outperform stock images every time. A local photographer for half a day is one of the better marketing spends a service business can make.
Functionality
Brochure site, online bookings, quoting calculators, member logins, payments, an online store with hundreds of products — each step up multiplies the build. Be clear about what you need on day one versus in year two.
SEO scope
Every site should ship with the foundations: crawlable structure, unique titles and descriptions, sensible internal linking, a sitemap and Search Console. Ongoing SEO — content, digital PR, link acquisition — is a separate monthly service and priced as one.
Who does the work
An agency with an office in the CBD, project managers and a sales team has to price for that. It buys you process, redundancy and someone to call. A solo builder or a small studio has lower overheads and less redundancy. Neither is automatically the right answer.
Ongoing costs to budget for
- Domain name. A .com.au typically costs around A$20–A$40 a year. Note that .au domains require an Australian presence, such as an ABN or ACN.
- Hosting. From free for small static sites on platforms like Netlify or Cloudflare Pages, to A$10–A$50 a month for managed WordPress hosting.
- Email. Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 per user, per month, if you want name@yourbusiness.com.au.
- Maintenance. WordPress sites need plugin, theme and core updates or they become a security problem. Static sites have far less to maintain.
- Changes. Ask upfront what a content change costs and how quickly it gets done.
- Software. Booking systems, live chat, review widgets and CRMs are usually monthly subscriptions in their own right.
And the one nobody quotes: your time. Content, photos, approvals and feedback are the usual reasons a project takes three months instead of three weeks.
When cheap is a false economy — and when it is not
You will find agencies arguing that a low-cost website always gets replaced within eighteen months. That is true when “cheap” means a template with no structure, stock photos, invented copy and no way to find it in search. It is not true simply because the number is small.
What matters is whether the site has a page for each thing you sell, says clearly where you work, loads quickly on a phone, gives people an obvious way to enquire, and can be added to later. A A$299 site that does all of that will out-earn a A$5,000 site that does none of it.
The genuinely risky version of cheap is the one that locks you in: a platform you cannot export from, a domain registered in someone else's name, or a monthly fee that never ends and leaves you with nothing if you stop paying. Check those three things before price.
Five questions to ask any quote
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the files when this is finished?
- Is the price fixed, and what specifically is excluded?
- Who writes the copy, and who supplies photos?
- What does a change cost after launch, and what is the turnaround?
- What happens at the end of any minimum term?
Any provider worth hiring will answer all five without hesitating.

Is GST included in Sydney web design prices?
Often not — many agencies quote “+ GST”, which adds 10%. WEBSYD adds no GST; the price you see is the service price.
Is it cheaper to build it myself on Wix or Squarespace?
In dollars, usually yes. In time, often not — and the common result is a site that looks acceptable but has no page structure for search and no clear conversion path.
Should I pay monthly for a website?
Only if you understand what happens when you stop. Some monthly offers never transfer ownership, so you have nothing after two years of payments.
Does a more expensive website rank better?
No. Structure, content, speed and relevance decide that, and none of them require a large budget.
